The role of conditional independence in the evolution of intelligent systems
Systems are typically made from simple components regardless of their complexity. While the function of each part is easily understood, higher...

The role of photobehaviour in sponge larval dispersal and settlement
Deciphering the behavioural ecology of adult (sessile) sponges is challenging. However, their motile larval stages afford opportunities to inv...

The sigh of the oppressed: The palliative effects of ideology are stronger for people living in highly unequal neighbourhoods
Ideologies that legitimize status hierarchies are associated with increased well-being. However, which ideologies have 'palliative effects', w...

Project: Promoting Altruism in Children
The socialization of cultural values and the development of Latin American prosociality
Studying child socialization across diverse cultures is crucial for developing comprehensive and generalizable theories of developmental psychology. Research suggests that Latin American children exhibit remarkably high levels of prosocial behavior. In this article, we theorize that this “hyperprosociality” is underpinned by a set of other-oriented values fundamental to Latin American culture, such as empathy, respect, helpfulness, familism, and affection. |

Project: Promoting Altruism in Children
The Socialization of Cultural Values and the Development of Latin American Prosociality
Understanding childhood socialization across multiple world cultures is important for developing comprehensive and generalizable theories of developmental psychology. Studies suggest that Latin American children show markedly high levels of prosocial behavior... |

The thermodynamic efficiency of computations made in cells across the range of life
Biological organisms must perform computation as they grow, reproduce, and evolve. Moreover, ever since Landauer's bound was proposed it has b...

The UnconTrust Database for Studies of Unconscious Semantic Processing and Attentional Allocation
This database, also presented as an interactive website, allows researchers to explore potential influences and obtain a bird’s eye view of studies on semantic processing of, and attentional capture by, stimuli that are not consciously perceived, and better understand the way processing of such stimuli has been empirically studied. |
