The Global Research Centre for Diverse Intelligences (GRCDI), put forth by Josep Call and Amanda Seed at the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at University of St Andrews, aims to facilitate interdisciplinary research on diverse forms of intelligence, including animal cognition, human creativity, and artificial general intelligence (AGI). Its objectives include advancing collaborative inquiry and expanding the global network of researchers, policymakers, and institutions engaged in the study of diverse intelligences. It aims to consolidate and build upon the last five years of work to create a lasting legacy from the generous funding by the Templeton World Charity Foundation (TWCF) and other supporters.

GRCDI will focus on four research themes: Systems Intelligence (examining plant, swarm, and distributed cognition), AGI (drawing insights from biological learning processes), Creativity (across species and machines), and Global Citizen Science (involving public participation in DI research).

The Centre plans to allocate 50% of this initial funding to seed grants, supporting early-career researchers and global partnerships piloting projects such as AI-driven behavioral modeling and citizen science initiatives. GRCDI will collaborate with Indiana University’s Center for Possible Minds, Program for Advanced Research in Diverse Intelligences ran by Jacob Foster and Erica Cartmill to co-fund postdoctoral fellowships and train the next generation of DI researchers.

To build community, the Centre will host the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute organized with the IU team and Summit and coordinate with other TWCF-funded DI hubs. Public engagement will include partnerships with Edinburgh Zoo and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums to develop educational exhibits, a DI Summer School for high school students in 2026, and regular “DI Evenings” in St Andrews.

Technical infrastructure will include a Retrieval Augmented Generation tool for synthesizing DI literature and “Data Clinics” connecting researchers with AI specialists. For long-term sustainability, GRCDI will pursue further grant funding and industry partnerships while serving as a global hub for inclusive, ethical, and collaborative research on diverse intelligences.
