What does it mean to be human? How can we promote human flourishing in a digital world?

We now face a wide range of ethical and governance issues for civil society that center on the questions. The world stands at a moment of significant crisis and opportunity in the development of artificial intelligence.

Within this context, the Government of the United Kingdom has made the commitment to provide global leadership in the area of the ethics of artificial intelligence and digital innovation. Leadership in this field will rest with the new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI). The success of the project will be a significant contribution to the development of a coherent and consistent ethical approach to AI. Informed by the great faith traditions, such an approach can shape the attitudes towards AI in the United Kingdom and around the world.

This project aims to provide key research and engagement support for one of the leading Directors on the Board of the new Centre, The Lord Bishop of Oxford, the Rt. Revd. Dr. Steven Croft. This is a key position for influencing the global development of the ethics of artificial intelligence for good. Bishop Steven has been appointed as one of 12 board members for the CDEI to offer an informed perspective into the board’s workings from the perspective of the Christian Church, faith communities, and civil society. Other board members include Sir Roger Taylor (Ofqual), Professor Lord Robert Winston (Imperial), Dr. Adrian Weller (Alan Turing Institute), Dr. Kriti Sharma (SAGE) and Professor Luciano Floridi (Oxford).
