This project led by Anton Rizki, CEO at The Center for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS) and co-directed by Arianto Patunru at Australian National University, will critically assess how industrial policies impact human flourishing and the Indonesian government's ability to reach its objective of transforming Indonesia into a developed economy by 2045. This project will build upon a methodology and approach to research that was piloted during a previous Templeton World Charity Foundation–supported project, which examined the effects of international trade on poverty, income, gender equality, health, and the environment in Indonesia through 5 research papers. These papers have since been published on the centre's website and cited more than 200 times in policy and academia papers in Indonesia and the region.
This new project shifts the focus to domestic industrial policy, analyzing how such policies influence key development goals. Specifically, it will evaluate whether government protectionist strategies align with the ambitious 2045 targets: becoming one of the world’s top five economies, achieving high-income status, and improving socio-economic and health outcomes.
The project will produce four academic research papers, three academic roundtables, a launch event, and a broader media dissemination effort. It will examine industrial policy effects on socio-economic and green growth, income equality, and healthcare outcomes.
Research themes will include:
The project hopes to make a compelling academic case for the importance of open markets for human flourishing during the first century after liberation from colonial rule, and aims to contribute significantly to both scholarly research and practical policy discussions in the broader context of global economic development.
